Morton’s Neuroma

What is it?

This is a painful condition affecting the ball of the foot. It is caused by irritation to the nerves in the sole of the foot, which become thickened and painful.

What are the symptoms?

Patients report a burning pain, sometimes with pins and needles, radiating into the toes (the 3rd and 4th toes are most commonly affected, followed by the 2nd and 3rd). The pain usually develops over a fairly long period of time and worsens without treatment

What causes it?

This condition is often associated with bunions, flat feet and wearing tight shoes.

What to do at home

Avoid wearing high heels or shoes with a narrow toe box and wear a show with a wide toe box.

When to seek help

If your symptoms persist despite avoiding tight footwear.

How is it treated?

Special insoles that reduce the irritation on the nerve can be helpful, as can steroid injections. Where conservative measures have failed, surgery is sometimes required; this is generally a very successful operation.
